Green chilli is a common vegetable that is needed to prepare dishes every day in the kitchen. Many times, we hear the news of green chillies that we get in the market has been undergoing serious use of chemical pesticides. Sometimes, the import of green chillies had prohibited by different countries in the past, mainly because of the use of excessive chemical pesticides.
We all know the importance of keeping a vegetable garden at our home. But the lack of places to cultivate vegetables hinders people to do cultivation. In this respect, nurturing green chillies on the terrace or at the balcony has great importance. By doing so, we can maximize the use of space on the terrace and also flat-dwellers can grow their veggie garden.
How to plant green chilli seeds?
- It is from the seeds that new plants are growing and if we don’t get the seeds, we can take it from the dried chilli. Take good quality chilli, wash it well and if it is possible to keep the seeds in Pseudomonas liquid for half an hour before sowing. That helps the plant to grow quickly and with virus or pest resistance.
- Green chilli plant doesn’t need the utmost care while cultivating. The most important factor is choosing the right seeds to grow. Jwalamukhi, jwala, manjari, ujwala, and anugraha are important varieties of chillies to grow. It is better to sow seeds in the appropriately raised seedbeds. It is possible to disinfect the soil by flaming organic substance such as rice straw. After sowing it is recommended to mulch the seeds with leaves and water the seeds everyday morning.
- Once the germination is done, remove the mulch and the seeds will be ready to transplant into pots or agro grow bag in 4-5 weeks. After flowering, it will take up to 60 days for the chilli to fully ripen.
Fertilisers to use for better crops
- It is depending on the fertility rate of the soil that the required fertilisers are calculated. Generally, it is recommended to add FYM/compost and mix it well with the soil before sowing seeds are done. Nitrogen, phosphorous and potash can be applied at the right proportion, from the beginning of the sowing and after planting the plants.
- It is recommended to sow the seedlings during May- June, before the start of the southwest monsoon for it is a rain-fed crop. And the planting of chilli plants can be done during September- October months. The plant is zero tolerance for both overwatering and drought. Maintain the water lever as desirable for the crop. Give support when the plant grows and began to produce chilli.
- Once the plant began to grow, a regular examination is required at the plant easily gets an infection. Though the use of chemical fertiliser is not recommended, if it is necessary it has to be used. Choose the pesticides that target the specific pest. By this, the killing of beneficial organisms can be stopped. Use of dimethoate, neem oil with garlic emulsion, dichlorvos, and quinalphos are recommended according to the infestation.
