Varghese Tharakan from Velur grama panchayat in Thrissur district is creating a jackfruit revolution with the ‘Ayurjack’ variety.
Ayur Jack is a famous jackfruit variety in Kerala. It is developed by a Keralite, Mr. Varghese Tharakan. Ayur Jack bears the sweet ‘Varikka’ variety of jackfruit for one-and-a-half years under proper care. Tharakan’s scientifically designed five-acre plantation (Ayurjack Farm) is a perfect model for rainwater harvesting. Small trenches are dug up to create many layers on the hill slopes to harvest every drop of rainwater.
People from far and near, including experts from reputed foreign universities such as Colorado and Adelaide and a BBC team, have visited the Ayurjack plantation to see the miracle of farming on a sloppy hill area. Varghese Tharakan is an organic farmer and winner of the Shony Mitra Award for Soil and Water Conservation award.
Due to Ayurjack’s early maturity and smaller size, the plant can be effectively grown in drums and is suitable for terrace farming. Thus helping people with less space to have a jackfruit tree of their own on their terrace. The fruit of Ayurjack is also so versatile, as it can be used in all kinds of dishes, making it an allrounder among the jackfruits.
Ayur Jackfruit Characteristics
- Gum is very less compared to other varieties.
- One jackfruit weighs around 5-12 Kg.

How to Plant An Ayur Jack Sapling?
Suitable location
- Finding the right place for planting the tree is the first step. Ayurjack requires abundant sunlight, so make sure not to plant the tree under any other trees or shades.
- It is important to avoid waterlogging as it can lead to root rot and other diseases.
Planting instruction
- Dig a hole that is 2 meters in height, width and length.
- It is recommended to use budded plants instead of seeds as the bud will get all the traits of its mother plant. The budded plant tends to grow faster than the seeds.
Fertilizers to use
- Mix two cups of cow manure and goat manure, 1 kilogram of groundnut cake powder and neem cake powder, 50 grams of pseudomonas, and upper soil and fill the hole with this mix.
- After filling the hole, take another small hole to plant the jackfruit bud. Make sure the budded part should come above the soil level while planting.
- Water the plant twice a day at least for 6 months and after that water it once a day.
Care / Pruning
- No constant care is needed for the tree as it has good immunity against pest and other diseases. But any of the leaves comes under bugs or fungal attack, use Bordeaux mixture.
- Prune the unnecessary branches every year as the stem is not thick as other varieties.
Post fertilization procedures
- After the initial fertilization, repeat the same amount of fertilizations every 6 months.
- It is important to apply fertilizer in the evening or the morning. Do not do it during noontime, when the sun is hot.
- After fertilization, it is important to water the plant at least for two weeks, in the morning and afternoon to reduce heat exhaustion from fertilizers.
